Cal McCrystal (Director)

Cal McCrystal was born in Belfast. He trained at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama and with Philippe Gaulier.

For the past 20 years he has worked extensively as an actor in theatre, TV, film and radio.

As a director, over the past seven years, he has created some of the best new comedy in the UK. Much of Cal’s work tours the world. Writing and directing credits include: Let the Donkey Go, I Am A Coffee and Horses For Courses for Peepolykus, Mighty Boosh and Auto Boosh for Noel Fielding and Julian Barratt (now a BBC TV series), The Tailors and Basking With Sharks for Leikin Loppu, Spymonkey’s Stiff and Spymonkey’s Cooped for Spymonkey, Gladiatrix for Population: 3, Our Funny Bones for Gavin and Gavin, The Joy of Wine for Black Sheep, and number one tours for Cambridge Footlights, Mel and Sue and Kate Dimbleby. He directed Loot at Derby Playhouse last year.His productions have won a Total Theatre Award and a Perrier Award.

Cal is currently Director of Comedy for Cirque du Soleil. His first collaboration with Cirque, Varekai, is now touring in the USA and the latest one, Zumanity, is resident in Las Vegas. He is currently making plans to present Spymonkey’s Cooped in New York.
