| The Funniest Theatre You Will See "The Bubonic Play" has the audience rolling in the aisles at the brilliance of its comedy and the extent of its dedication to smut.
The story of George, Lord Ponsonby, his maid, Mathilde, and a wandering minstrel in search of a cure for the bubonic plague, it is probably the sexiest play of the Fringe. It includes a liberal helping of lascivious gags and enough simulated sex to make you gag.
But it is firmly rooted in old theatrical traditions and the quality of the writing means that this show is so much more than just a series of dirty jokes. Minstrel songs and even a Punch and Judy show are thrown into the mix. There is a real sense of watching the sort of show that would have been entertaining audience hundreds of years ago, but with modern twists.
Tight direction by Cal McCrystal and fine performances from Clare Thomson, Jamie Glassman, and Mat Baynton make for some of the funniest theatre you will see. Accomplished actors, they all have brilliant comic timing. They work so well together that with a nod, a wink, or a grimace the audience is in fits of laughter.
A racy, ribald, riotous romp. Adelaide Theatre Guide, 5th March 06 |
